Job Vacancy: Observability Engineer (Platform Engineer)

To strengthen the new Business Technology Organization (BTO), we are looking for an: Observability Engineer (32-40 hours, Arnhem).

Your Role Within the Team

You will work within the monitoring team of Infrastructure, Integration & Cloud (IIC). This team provides generic databases and middleware platforms within the organization, including integration, monitoring, and CI/CD. The monitoring team believes in self-service and automation. Using tools such as Ansible and CI/CD, you will manage the Elastic stacks and Prometheus together with your DevOps colleagues. You will contribute to the setup and management of systems like Elasticsearch, Kibana, Prometheus, and Grafana. Together with the DevOps teams, you will ensure that new deployments proceed smoothly and contribute to the 24/7 service of TenneT's IT infrastructure.

Your Responsibilities

You are responsible for developing and managing the observability services offered to application teams within the organization. The Elastic stack plays a crucial role in TenneT's application landscape. It is your task to ensure that the services optimally align with the work of your users and to technically integrate them with adjacent areas such as CI/CD pipelines and our basic infrastructure. You will collaborate with engineers from other teams to ensure that the services meet needs and adhere to the agreed SLAs.

Main Tasks as an Observability Engineer at TenneT?

  • Implementing and managing observability tools: including Elastic stack, Prometheus, and Grafana;
  • Developing standard observability building blocks that make it easy for teams to manage their applications;
  • Analyzing our infrastructure to identify monitoring elements;
  • Taking actions for the incident management process;
  • Developing, implementing, and executing test plans for new and existing features.
  • Writing automations in the form of Python scripts, HELM charts, Ansible playbooks, and Go programs.
  • Managing the environment by executing upgrades and patches and by troubleshooting and resolving issues with the relevant tools.

Availability: It is important that the candidate is available for the entire requested period in the application.

Requirements

What do we expect from you?

  • Demonstrable experience with the Elastic stack, preferably Elastic Cloud on Kubernetes;
  • You have experience with some of the following technologies:
    • Setting up and managing distributed data systems using software like Elasticsearch and/or Kafka;
    • Establishing and managing CI/CD workflows with tools like Jenkins;
    • Programming in languages such as Go and Python;
    • Setting up or managing observability in Kubernetes clusters;
    • Establishing automation based on Ansible, HELM charts, and ArgoCD;
  • Knowledge of automation and Infrastructure-as-Code (Ansible, Bitbucket, Jenkins);
  • Experience with monitoring platforms such as Prometheus and Grafana is a must;
  • Experience with Kubernetes is a must;
  • Experience with Linux server environments is desired.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role is required;
  • You are open to feedback and contribute to team results, even when it doesn’t directly serve your own interests;
  • A proven track record of working with DevOps in a Scrum team;
  • Experience building and maintaining your own CI/CD pipelines;
  • Willingness to provide 24x7 support is a must (approximately once every 6 weeks or less).

Working conditions: This job role offers a balanced split between operational (run) and project (build) work, with a distribution of 75% operational and 25% project-related tasks. To minimize the impact on business operations, some changes may be scheduled outside of regular business hours.
